Ever think about where the food on your Thanskgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, or family dinner table comes from? I sure do, and I'm thankful for the hardworking farmworkers who take risks, often sacrificing their mental & physical health, to get it there. You can give back to farmworkers this giving season by supporting Student Action with Farmworkers. SAF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change.
This week, December 1-7, I'm participating in a grassroots fundraising drive. I need your help. Join me in participating in Student Action with Farmworkers' Farmworker Awareness Campaign to support our work for greater respect and justice for farmworkers. I am excited to support this organization and I need your support to make this campaign successful.
I have been involved with SAF in the past through volunteering as a documentarian with their theater for social change. I accompanied SAF interns into fields in eastern NC and documented their comprehensive educational theater pieces educating farmworkers about the risks of STDs and general sexual health. Because farmworkers are away from their homes and often their families, and usually don't have access to good medical care, they're succeptible to these and other health issues. You can check out the work the theater program does in this short film.
SAF is important to me because they are a dedicated and transparent organization from my home community that works to bring justice to an issue close to my heart. Whether it's through studying immgration & Latino studies at NYU or interning at Centro de los Derechos del Migrante in Mexico, I'm learning that fixing the broken immigration system in this country requires people to take grassroots action. SAF is a model for that action. When you give to SAF, you see where your money goes; directly to the salaries and resources for people who work there.
My goal is to raise a minimum of $1000 to support SAF's work educating the public about farmworkers. My campaign begins December 1st and ends December 7th. To reach this goal, I need at least 6 people to give $100, 4 people to give $50, and 8 people to give $25. You can be part of something bigger this giving season; anything you are able to give goes a long way to keep SAF doing what they do so well.
